How To Set Up A Les Paul Style Guitar
true this. good info. i use the acronym TRAIN when i have to do a whole set-up, i just forgot what the N is so just TRAI. lol
This guy is hard to watch and listen to!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch
As long as my guitars are well intonated, have no dead spots or fret buzz, I never bother adjusting the action. Some of my guitars have much lower actions than others. I think it’s good to play with different string heights anyway, adds to the variety and means if someone just hands you a random guitar with any old setup, you’ll feel at home playing it 😃
very cool video great info .
The fake " antiquing" drives me nuts... hipster, corny, and u look douchy playing a brand new guitar that looks like a 3 yr old took a paint scraper to it! Create your own dings and dents lazy people! Don't be a tool
After you adjust the truss rod shouldn't you let the guitar sit maybe overnight for the wood in the neck to pull back?
All I care about is that my guitars stay in tune, and don’t buzz. Relief is a huge part of the latter obviously, but so is fretwork in general.
I had a chameleon when I was a kid, but he came to a tragic end. He exploded trying to hide in a box of crayons. These days, there's a desert iguana living behind a hole in the sheet rock at the end of my bathtub. I named him Iggy. He comes out at night and hangs out in the tub, hunting the big bugs that come up through the drain. I try to do a catch and release with the bugs in the morning, and most of them are surprisingly cooperative. Iggy seems to like old country music like Hank Williams or The Texas Playboys, but he seems to be especially fond of Emmylou Harris. Iggy is a good pal, and I like having him around.
100% correct. The truss rod is the first and sometimes the only thing to adjust
I have this amazing EQ and dynamics control device that works miracles on any guitar you use it with. It's my right hand. I can get an infinite range of EQ depending on where I use it on the length of the string between the bridge and the middle of the neck. I can also achieve nearly infinite variations in gain and breakup, from clean to stinky gnarly by how hard my hand hits the strings. It also works well with any guitar on planet earth, and I can get surgical precision in the harmonics and saturation from the grid of the 12AX7 in my Princeton, based on the mechanical energy applied to the strings. I can carry this miraculous device with me everywhere I go, and it cost me absolutely nothing. The hard part was learning how to use it properly, but once that was done, the search was over, and I no longer had to lie awake at night wondering how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
We should point out this video every time a guitar restorer curses up a storm about people butchering their guitars. :)
I put a little drop of Loctite on my nuts so they won't move, just like when working on a car. Feels hot too. 😂
Watching this in 2024. Finally, a good explanation of staggered pole pieces! Thank you Dylan!
So cool! Thank you! Subscribed!
I like the out of phase sound
Unrelated but I am looking for a diagram to wire a Telecaster 3 way switch with Humbucker at the neck position in SERIES with bridge PU instead of PARALLEL. Thanks.
"I mean are you playing the same guitar hours and hours a week" - err yes. What else should we do as guitarists? All put on a silly hat and glasses and talk in a silly voice on youtube?
I love ligthter strings for bending and vibratos, but some fast stuff is much harder to play, I find.
Plain and simple advice. That is what knowledgeable and honest people give. I thank you for that.
I’m curious what your opinions are about Evertune bridges. How is it going to affect season changes to the guitar?
I never "worried" about setting up my guitars, I just did it.
The drying of the wood is a huge factor, among others (as you allude to) and one of the reasons PRS and others, pay attention to this. But the cost of the guitar won't always guarantee it. I have 2005 Fender American Deluxe Strat that had a tremendous problem with fret sprout. If the fretboard had been dried properly and the humidity in the manufacturing environment had been right, the issue likely would not have occurred. It took me several years before the guitar aged into a better situation, as well as some pretty intense fret end work, through multiple seasons. At the time I bought it, this was the top of the production line guitar and pricey. Because of the sprout issue, I got the guitar at about 50% it's retail value (at the time, I would not have been able to afford it otherwise).
In a nutshell don't listen to folks making rules about art! BE AN ARTIST, DO YOUR OWN THING!
All there is to say is that if Jeff, Eddie, Eric, Duane, Prince, et. al. had followed the rules where would we be. Screw the rules, step out of the norms. Jimi did!
Why? Are you making new rules now? When you play like Eddie or Chet, folks might listen.
A nice slab of wood, with swirls and curls and those beautiful natural colours, accented with oils or other methods make the instruments beautiful. Get a piece of wood because it looks awesome, and that's it.
Spot on! That's why I buy true quality guitars and not those Epiphones or Squiers.
That's what I do to.. I only check my intonation when changing strings after adjusting my neck relief. It's just strange that some of your strings are intonated and some are not.. It would make more sense if all are bad intonated if the neck relief is changed unless the neck is somewhat twisted.
Right-on. If any-one knows how-to it is you Dylan. Now, I have a 335 with P90 dogears( yes 335). It is a custim shop and it sounds fantastic un-plugged, is there a way to get closer to a Humbucking bridge tone without putting a new pixkup in, like maybe stuffung the cavity under the pickup with some-thing( metal, wood, rubber)? Thankyou.
its a mid cut, that's what it does. Instead of losing the high you lose the mids, which is worse if you're a blues player. This will make a bright sounding guitar unbearable.
spot on! In some cases, the strings can slightly oxidize, which also changes intonation. Used strings as well will change intonation. In both instances, simply change the strings with the same gauge and brand!
Bull, even Joe Walsh's perfect pitch ear won't detect the small frequency change caused by surface corrosion. If so you could just tune by wiping the syrings clean. I personally set my string heights to my playing. The length between nut and bridge determines intonation. Over 60 years on the guitar. No a novice needs to learn how to fine adjust their instruments to them and their playing. Make it personal to you. I'll bet Gilmore does, and Knopfler, Gary Moore, et. al. many others. Bet none of them tossed those allen wrenches, Gibson truss nut tools or other things that let them personalize their instruments and style.
It's very funny 😂 The last time I refreted my strat maple neck, I changed for stainless steel frets. I can hear the difference of this little detail. The same thing happened when I changed the neck itself long time ago. It was one piece maple. I replaced it with flame maple with glued maple fretboard. I was able to hear the difference. On my les paul junior, replacing the bone nut with brass made a huge difference. I could write a book on how every piece of a guitar can affect the sound... 😆😆😆
Most of it was what was available at the time. Aside from my choice of a MIM Strat(Eric Clapton fan). Most of my early gear was based on what either my guitar teacher used or just what was cheap/available Eventual noiseless pickups on said strat: My house had fluorescent lights in the basement(my practice area). Standard single coils were LOUD with any distortion at all. Choice of Roland micro-cube: first guitar teacher used it + cheap. This kept me good for a while. Peavey Studio Pro 112: available cheap on auction near me. Nobles ODR-1: youtube Looper pedal: youtube for practice Cheapo metronome: necessary for practice Epiphone SG: friend was selling cheap Fender Mustang II amp: came with said SG. Great!!!! Amp. Made me appreciate the Fender Bassman Telecaster: had wrist issues (poor form and computer issues). Carpalx wrist braces, vertical mice, and keeping thumb behind middle and index while playing helped the wrist issues. I wanted a 7.25” radius neck to maybe help wrist. What I wanted was cheap, so made a partscaster w/ fender noiseless. Great choice and learning experience. Chords are easier on a 7.25” btw
Excellent teaching and coaching! Thank you for the guitar wisdom!
I bought an American Pro II Jazzmaster in the same color and love it. The only thing I don't use is the series circuit much. It's too Gibson like for me. Not a fan of the Les Paul sound overall.
Was Harry Styles number one in the list?
If Taylor Swift went into a toilet cubicle and took a dump and there were eight pieces of stool in the toilet bowl, Swift wouldn't be the 8th best guitarist in the cubicle.
I know by what I hear and see! It only takes a second to check on your setup. Any guitarist worth their salt action matters. Those some preferred high or low or medium it matters to them. To downplay that yes it shows your lack of knowledge!
….. action? Do you mean neck relief? I believe I said it was the most important measurement and absolutely must be right. …. If you mean “action” …. You show a lack of knowledge
No.1. you could not be more wrong about guitar setup. Different guitars made of different woods, some more sensitive to others to the climate that they're exposed to. Respectfully you should stick to electronics that's what you know you're not qualified as Luther or guitar tech. I have played guitar professionally for almost 40 years and set up definitely makes a difference. (Touring guitar techs are more than string changers!) To a skilled Craftsmen it only takes a few minutes to check and or adjust your action and your relief play after changing a full set of strings. It should be part of the whole process with a change as in cleaning fretboard and if needed lightly dressing frets. A complete string change with adjustments if needed and hitting the frets real quick takes about 15 minutes max.
Do I know you? Are you actually aware of my level of experience? It Does not appear as though you do. You have only been playing for 40 years?
Dude that guitar is so nice lol
I learned that the sequence of setting up a guitar is TRAIN: TRuss rod, Action, INtonation.
Would have been great to show the pick up wiring to the switch ?
Apocalypse schecter is very bright, any other is darker
I like my action just under 1mm all the way down to the 24th fret. It I have any buzz or dead spots nope. So since my tool is in a very specific high performance setting and I live in Iowa where humidity changes a lot I have to adjust things several times a year. I agree with you about the neck and just a minor adjustment but since it is so slight if I have a vibrato which is usually yes then I just turn the mounting posts slightly since it is much quicker and almost the same results. Also, the weather will change and then I have to move it right the fuck back. I know it is a truss rod thing and if it goes too far I do pop off the cover and adjust the neck then check the vibrato height. Like i said high performance machines/tools require more maintenance that is true with cars, houses, women and yes guitars as well. My Gibson and my Fender move just as often as my cheaper ones. The older the wood is makes it more less. My older Gibson I adjust a lot less often.
Great review! I'm sold on the Pro 2.
This is honestly an example of total misinfo regarding guitars, telling people they shouldn't touch the acrews.. Of course you should adjust the screws you can take a guitar from sounding like a junk 200 buck epiphone to a ringer gibson 59 by adjusting humbucker screws. It'd literally a graphic equaliser for your guitars tone. Set the pickups fairly low and begin to adjust them. A good guide for beginners is to look at a strat with the way they set their poles and use those as a guide for neck bridge etc, then adjust to taste. With p a fs literally a quarter turn can make a night and day difference in tone whether your guitar sounds like garbage or the best thing ever
lol…. Speaking of misinformation…
@DylanTalksTone erm, so I'm wrong? Ummm I suppose they put those screws there just cause they look cool huh? Do you even play bro? You certainly don't set up
The video was pretty clear about why they were put there… maybe watch it again? To that point…. How do you account for the literally thousands of pickup winds in existence that are not adjustable… and flat…. The assertion that you can make a 200 “buck” epiphone sound like a 59 Les Paul is also ludicrous and inaccurate… As far as using a Strat as a guide… if you use a vintage one as a guide… modern string construction and fretboard radii will make that incorrect. And again…. Many are flat so…. Yes. Inaccuracy abounds in your comment. I would hate for new players to be mislead. We have in depth videos on all of this if you need further assistance in understanding the particulars
@DylanTalksTone well sure but we are talking about adjustable humbuckers. Strat is only a rough guide for what frequencies are best reduced, obviously you'd use your common sense to look at string guage and radius...please. but it's fine it's free for anyone to try out assuming they have adjustable humbuckers, so hey world try it for yourself, it costs nothing. Set your humbuckers low and adjust pole pieces to taste remembering that no preamp, no tube, no pickup no distortion and no human ear finds being slammed with all frequencies at once pleasant or musical, listen to me and your guitar will open up and sound like a million bucks, or listen to this guy if you like your humbuckers to sound wooly, muddy, overly compressed and cheap. Oh and sure I could make a well set up epiphone sound better than a badly set up custom shop easily.
What about the slug side…
? This tip did not solve my problem and I’m hoping that you would suggest something else. I just put together a diy kit with all new parts 4 CTS pots, and two humbuckers wired 50s style. I get sound from both pickups but very very low and only when the volume pot is all the way up. With a multi meter I have verified that everything is grounded, the pickups are at appropriate resistance (7-8k) and the capacitors are at about .23. I am at a loss to know what to do next. Thank you for your help.
I like a high action on my guitars.
Can flip the magnet, or can rotate it 180 degrees without flipping it. same results either way. 👍
